We’ve all heard of mental health and with 40 Million pounds raised every year (according to the charity Mind). The blogging community has really helped in bringing awareness and for that I am so proud. But, today I want to shine a light towards your Brain Health. There are 850,000 people in the UK living with Alzheimer’s and 225,000 people will develop the illness this year. That’s one person every three minutes. The number is set to rise to 1 Million by 2025. This is shocking and devastating. In this blog post I will share with you 5 way to help reduce the risk and I encourage every single one of you to apply these into your daily or weekly routines. Your brain health is just as important as your physical health and mental health.
1. Brain Stimulation
It is important to keep your brain stimulated and it helps to build up and challenge your brain. By doing these activities daily or weekly, it can help towards preventing age-related memory loss. Personally, being an actress learning lines is challenging for my brain. Memorizing paragraphs of text and having to recite it word for word. Other activities you could look into are:
- Puzzles (I love sudoku and word searches)
- Learning Languages
- Art and Crafts
- Learning an Instrument
2. Physical Exercise
Physical exercise is a great way to keep your brain healthy. By exercising your muscles you increase the number blood vessels which help carry oxygen to the part of the brain which controls your thoughts. Which is why you always hear people saying they feel great after working out. Even if it’s taking the stairs or parking further away from work. It all counts.
3. Stay Social
We live in a world where working and being successful has taken priority over our socializing lives and spending time with loved ones. I know I am guilty of this myself. It is proven that socializing and spending time with loved ones lowers blood pressure and can release endorphins.
4. Feed The Brain
Feeding the brain is just as important than feeding your muscles before and after a workout. Your brain is always working out. Exactly the same way you fuel your body before going the gym, you need to fuel your brain. Some great brain foods include:
- Nuts and Seeds (Walnuts especially)
- Coconut Oil
5. Cut Back
Most of all it’s important to cut out on anything toxic in your life. It could be negative people but also substances such as Tobacco, Alcohol, Energy Drinks, Coffee etc.. It doesn’t do your brain any favors and it only intoxicates your brain. So cut back and cut out.
I hope you all apply these 5 way to become more brain healthy. It is important to include all these point into your daily or weekly routine. Brain illnesses such as Alzheimer’s affects 1 out of 6 people in the UK. Therefore, chances someone you know might be going through this dreadful illness or knows someone who is battling this illness. I have left a link at the bottom of this page for Eventbrite’s non profit fundraising page. Here you can find so many charity events in your area and also host your own charitable events. This is a great way to give back and to support others. I hope you all check it out.
I hope you all have a lovely day
